All Righty. Well, for over a year now, Mazz has been promised a trip to germany to see her fav show, Tanz der Vampire. We were gonna go last summer for her birthday, then at halloween, then at christmas to see it open in Hamburg, but we FINALLY went out this week! And tho I love Vampires, I really wanted to go see StEx since we were in the country. I'd originally wanted us to go for four days, see Vampires and Lion King in Hamburg (Rob Grose is in it!) and then Bochum for StEx, and Dusseldorf for Cats. But, that'd have been too expensive, so it was just Vampires and StEx.
Tuesday morning we undertook the mammoth drive to the opposite side of the M25- we live the far side of london from Stanstead airport, took us 2 hours to drive there. Mother was rather tense- we have quite a track record for disasters on family holidays, so we played everything VERY safe. With my bad shoulder being extremely painful, my gorgeous, wonderful, darling sister carried my bag for me! Must pay her back in chocolate for that... (Yes, I know you'll read this, I'll buy you chocolate! on Monday!) Stanstead's a strange hangar of an airport- tis really quiet. We were flying Ryanair, way budget, but it got us there.
We flew to Hamburg Lubeck airport. Then we took a coach to Hamburg itself- about 1 1/2 hour ride! But was smooth journey, we found our EXTREMELY nice hotel and had a rest. Vampires started at 8pm, and we had to collect the tickets by 7.30. So, 5.30 we set off, to get some dinner before the show. I love the german transport- tis so easy to follow! (I now know how we went wrong with the ICE last summer too) We got to Holstenplatz, where the theatre is, magnificent new building, tis HUGE and spectacular! However it's in a rather business district, a couple of bars but not much in the way of restaurants. Bars of course, because we were right by the huge Holsten Pils brewery!
We crossed over to the theatre to maybe ask for a recommendation of where to ask, but at the foot of the magnificent staircase we were approached by a couple of people giving out flyers for local restaurants! Rather handy... so we were directed to this bar called "An 1905", which is a little place, decked up as it had been in 1905, unsurprisingly. BEAUTIFUL little place, and gorgeous food! Not overly expensive, delicious, freshly-cooked, we got there at 6, and we finished eating 7.15... giving us 15 mins before we lost our tickets! A little stressful, but it was fine.
The Neue Flora Theatre is RATHER gorgeous in its modernity.. There's something about it that suggests it was made according to a computer model. They didn't have much particularly eye-catching merchendise, just the normal mugs, keyrings with the logo on, so we just got a brochure and programme. They sell them separately there, as opposed to the normal cast insert into the brochure. But then, the programme is full colour and a fat thing, so tis ok.
Tanz review coming up!
