I think it's a Catholic(plz correct if wrong) rite of passage, much like an adult baptism. It's basically the teenager looking over the promise made on their behalf on Christening and saying 'Yep, I agree with that.'.

It seems like forever when I had my Lutheran Comfirmation... The ceremonies are also different. Don't you get wet in a Catholic one?... I just remember a friend talking about walking into water, but that could have been something else.
At mine I just answered a few question, drank the wine, ate the bread, and that was about it.
