Could someone please explain to me how karma works? I've seen it on a few forums but I really don't understand it!! If anyone knows...I'd be grateful for an explanation ;D

Basically it's feedback. If someone posts something clever, interesting, lovely, positive, then you can exalt them, boosting their Karma up a point. And if someone posts something stupid, rude, annoying, negative, then you can smite them and they lose a Karma point. You can exalt or smite once an hour. As admin, I can see who did what, but no-one else can. If I think someone is unfairly abusing the system I will have a word. I consider fair use of the system to be exalting/smiting in response to POSTS. Exalting someone with a low karma because you feel sorry for them is not fair, but exalting them for posting something intelligent is. This forum is small enough that you can easily get to know all the regulars, so the Karma system is not really used to its full potential here. In a bigger community, Karma gives a far more accurate guide to how the community regards someone than looking at their post count. Someone might have 5000 posts but a karma of -200, and you know they're an idiot who posts rubbish! Equally someone with 50 posts and a Karma of 300 is someone who has obviously posted valuable insights before.

;D
Ah popularity contests....
me, I rather not look at someone's karma to judge them.
I judge on what they write, and their opinions.
(not that I'm against the Karma meter)

the whole point of the Karma is that it reflects someone's posts, not how popular/unpopular they are!
Edit: Also, I treat the Exalting/Smiting in strict confidence - I will not tell anyone who has been voting for who! So don't be afraid to smite someone if they've earned it, it won't get back to them. the only exception to this is if we get any trolls - people signing up and not posting but just smiting one person repeatedly. if it's obvious the system is being abused I will fix it.
It's worth remembering the rules of this forum - it's not a public place, and it's not a democracy! Everyone's welcome but this is my forum, and I run it the way I see as best.
