Revealed: My next project!

After six months of agonising about what I should write next I am going to attempt the impossible. I am going to see if I can turn Mikhail Bulgakov’s extraordinary novel "The Master and Margarita" into a stage musical or, more probably, an opera. master

I know it has been done many times before but never, that I am aware of completely in music.

Bulgakov’s novel is a fantastical satire of Soviet life which begins with Satan visiting Moscow in fancy dress. He falls into conversation with a critic and a poet who are debating the existence of Jesus Christ and the Devil. Accompanied by a disorderly band of followers, which includes a tom cat, Satan begins to create havoc. Disappearances, destruction and death spread through the city and the beautiful and courageous Margarita discovers her lover has vanished into the chaos. Making a pact with the devil, she decides to try a little black magic of her own to save the man she loves.

I am very aware that this will be almost certainly the most ambitious undertaking I have ever embarked upon. It will therefore almost certainly falter and will depend on who my collaborators are. At the moment I have not approached anyone.

Finally, after the biggest clue in history, I am shocked that only one person has so far successfully cracked the code in the competition. As a consequence I am very worried about the current state of maths education in the UK!

He's currently appearing on TV every saturday to judge the competition to find the girl to play "Maria" in The Sound Of Music. It's err... very much rigged. But still quite entertaining.

However, ALW's reputation as a serious composer is taking quite a bashing since he's been involved with Reality TV - so announcing this new project might well be trying to distract from that.

It sounds more promising than "Woman In White". Not that that's saying much.

The source material certainly calls for something fresh in theatre. well... maybe not so much fresh... but unlike ALW really. i'm quite looking forward to it. Here's hoping that it'll be a bit more innovative like his shows used to be- but that would also depend on the creative team, I guess.

Belle, I know that WIW is certainly not your thing- but it was definetely much better in the theatre than what was on that crappy promo cd! it was a good show, but certainly not his best. i give that title to JCS and Sunset... of coarse, we can't all agree at once. I could see you falling asleep easily though in WIW- nothing too shiny or really eye catching except the train at the end really.

Well Tim Rice is still very much around, so there is still hope. Mind you, he has moved onward and upwards recently.

Tim Rice... hmmm. Maybe. He used to have it all, but lately he has gone off the rail a bit. I like Aida, but the lyrics were certainly nothing to the standard they used to be. Perhaps though the material didn't inspire him enough.

Well here's hoping that ALW can make some music with some edge in it to draw Tim back, and give us the same brilliance as in his glory days.

You know, that is really a good book and a pretty fast read. But from what I hear about the show, it's almost nothing like it. Anyone here read the book and see the show?
