Ever found a picture of a costume and thought, "That would look good as a train"? This is Celeste of the Star Wars Old Republic era. She even has riveted shoulder pieces! Some of PotO Christine's costumes lend well to the coach look (just shorten that skirt for easy skating). The stomacher alone could make a stain-glass window on a first-class carriage. Photo by Elysium-Sans depicting gender-flipped March Hare. The trim of the little jacket and all those ruffles could be window curtains/valences. I think I could have benefited from this when I was developing a fan-design for Duvay, ha ha. You'll notice that a lot of period pieces work well with coach designs -- possibly because they tend already have more available details, even elaborately so. Bodices can easily be paneling, wallpaper, bedsheets, etc. while the white chest can become a cushion or pillow. Hooks and buttons can become chains and rivets (or the type of rivet that you see on some fancy chairs). Similar with modern-day extravagant garments. Tassels? Those are curtains! As to *why* they look like they could be trains, I leave that to the brainy costume experts who actually know how to sew. Share your own pics!

I'd argue that there's a strong connection between the steampunk aesthetic and what we interpret as looking like trains
