Everyone's favorite macho diesel almost cramed into me the other night, on my way home from working at GameStop (actually, it might have been the Santa Fe engine - I was too much in shock to notice).
Anyway, on my way home, I usually have to cross at least three rail roads. Usually these stoppings have guard rails that come down when a train is crossing. Also, engines MUST whistle as they come to an intersection, just in case.
Last night, I was coming to a crossing and noticed the lights flashing. Not a huge thing - they usually flash a bit as a warning before the guard rails lower into place. So I keep going, and suddenly I hear an extremely loud whistle. I didn't even have time to look around - I just slammed on the breaks right there. Split second later, the train crosses my sight. In all honesty, if that train hadn't whistled like it was supposed to, it would have at least hit the tail end of my Stratus, if not full on.
Scared me to death. I usually slow way down and look both ways before crossing the rail roads. But when you live in a town that's made up of a freight yard, and you work about 20-25 minutes away, you cross a LOT of train tracks. I just hadn't been thinking about it, and I almost paid for it very dearly.
I reached a stop sign and sat there for like a full minute, before I realized that someone was behind me, and finally made it back to school.
The ironic part? My mom was almost hit by a train on at least 3 seperate occassionas. When she was a child, she was even on a train that tipped sideways off the tracks. She'd told me a few times (jokingly, of course), that that was how she was going to leave this world - by a train.
Like mother like daughter, right? It's only a matter of time, now
(I can joke about this now, because I'm not in the hospital or worse. Believe me, I was in shock at the time).
