Hey there!
Just a quickie. I'm looking into directing a number for our Musical Theatre Soc. "Summer Cabaret", and ideally I need to find a number which works well as a standalone piece, preferably upbeat, but not necessarily so.
It can be from anything. Broadway, West End, Film, Disney....I'm not sure about foreign musicals though, so assume they are exempt.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!
~Rach

For you to sing? For a guy to sing? A duet for girls? a duet for boys? a duet for one of each? for a group of boys to sing? For a group of girls to sing? For a mixed group? Just to sing or dancing in there as well? Just dancing? Any time limits?

Ideally a small group, preferably max 3-4 people. I wouldn't be singing. (I really really Can't lol!). And mixed group is fine, as well is all boys/all girls etc. As far as dancing goes, nothing too extreme as I don't feel I could direct that well. But as far as moving about the stage goes, and a bit of expressive/happy dancing (i.e. not too technically advanced), then that's all good EDIT : Also, probably worth noting that there will be a catwalked stage involved - so something that could make use of a "T" shaped space easily would be ideal.

Circle of Life works well as does Just can't Wait to be King, Hakuna Matata and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. Bustopher Jones and Macavity I've seen done well as small groups, AC/DC is another possible. Song that Goes Like This has been done by 4 people and worked quite well according to a friend.
What about Wilcomenfrom Caberet? So long, farewell from Sound of Music?
Duets I could give you a list as long as the page so I won't bother but almost any love song from any musical or Disney Classic will work as a stand alone.
Will that do as a start? You can make the movment as much or as little as you like, but there is bound to be somone who can dance who will help with that.

Those are some excellent suggestions, thank you! I particularly like the idea of "Wilkommen", though, that might involve more than a couple of people? Unless....actually you could use the catwalk for the showgirls to walk along and blow kisses to people, or give them flowers or something? I think I need to listen to Cabaret again.
I was thinking initially of something from "tick...tick...Boom!" or maybe something off Broadway? It would be so tempting to do "When Love is Inside You" from Dance of the Vampires...but as a rule I loathe what happened to that show, and also I'm not so sure how well it would work out of context.

If you want something a little more unusual then may I suggest something from Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens? All I need Is Disco ang Glitterboots Saved My life Spring to mind straight off. I'll go di through my music collection, I'm sure I'm missing something that should be obvious to me!
It Sucks to be Me and Everyone's a Little bit Racist have just screamed at me.... We are going for OFF Broardway damn you muses!

Hmm I'm not sure I know Saucy Jack well enough to do that justice really. And On-Broadway is perfectly fine too! Though I do wonder how you'd suggest staging "Q" songs sans puppets.

By just not having the puppets, the songs don't actually say that there needs to be puppets. Imagine you know nothing about the show apart from the songs and see what your imagination gives you. Only You has been done enough times without skates and they've been done quite well. How many times has Memory been preformed without cat costumes? If you are directing look for a new angle on the songs, Chicargo the film and Chicargo the stage musical are two different version of a story using the same plot and music. Play with it... get hold of the Original Hairspray, the new Hairspray and then compair them to each other and the stage musical, they are nothing alike! Again, with SJatSV use your imagination, ask Belle and Wrenchy what was done in the last couple of productions.
When is ths show going to be? give me a time scale and I can probably get down to Belle's and brainstorm with you. Just look beyond the standard and make whatever you do your own!

That's a very good point *nods* Thanks! And I have a week to let the committee know what I'd like to do. I'm planning on being at Belle's this weekend, assuming nothing comes up.

Ok, I won't make it to Belle's this weekend, but Belle and Wrench are good for brainstorming purposes.... Work out what you really want to do and I can help you sort out what to do with it if you want.
You also know who you are going to be working with.. Q won't work so well if you aren't going to have an asian and a black person, there are some limits with that. (It's not racisit if a asian makes an asian joke, it can be if a white person pretending to be asian tels the same joke.) You know what vocal range you are likely to be working with.
