Do you want to make an avatar from scratch, or do you need help putting an avatar in for this forum?
To make an avatar you need some sort of art/photo programme. You can basically do whatever you want as long as it's not bigger than 100 x 100 pixels, and if you animate it, it needs to stay under 40kb.
You then need to put it online - most people tend to agree that unless you have your own website, Photobucket.com is the best place to put a picture. If you get completely stuck, I can host it for you tho.
Once the pic is online, you need to know its address - then put that in your profile where it asks for it, and hopefully, da-dum, one avatar!

What sort of avatar did you want? the sort I have at the moment is just a photo that is with the background taken out and a border and some lettering put on. (My current one is made by Saffity- credit where credit is due) But you could have one like this- which is a bunch of photos I edited slightly in paintshop and then put through animation shop so they run one after the other. (or any other paint/ photo and animation programme) You could also have one like my last Avi here which was- which is a film made on a digi camera and put into an animation programme (this one was made by Fechten) You can use almost anything though as long as it fits the size limits. So yeah, if you want more help making, let us know and I'm sure someone can give you tips

To make an animated avatar it's essential to have software capable of doing it! I use JASC animation shop 3, which came with paintshop pro. Your best option is to find some animating software, and hunt online for a good tutorial to use it...

For a first avatar, that's pretty good! The layout and concept is very good. What program did you use? You have got a bit pixellated when re-sizing the picture, it depends on the capability of your software how well that goes. The other thing you may want to try, but again, depends entirely on the program you use, is to put a soft shadow behind the text to make it stand out a bit more. Personally I do this with layers, I do the text twice - the upper layer in the colour I want, and the lower layer in black. Then I select just the under layer and blur it loads, so it makes a translucent shadow exactly following the text, only darkening the picture under where it's needed. I keep meaning to make more avatars... after the 27th I might well get on with that!
