Right, this is an event our absent Moderator Minxie ADORES! It's a wide-ranging appeal casual convention - there's anime, comics, mainstream sci fi and fantasy, and a WHOLE LOT of Cosplay! The Cosplay spills out of the hall and takes over the whole of the Excel Centre. They hold it twice a year, May and October.
Last May, Mazz, Rachel and I went along, they were cosplaying Angels from Doctor Who - quite a few Who cosplayers there, but the stone angel and the host angel were very popular, and they had a great time scaring people! We had bought the more expensive tickets in advance, but I'm not sure that the amount of time we actually spent inside the ticketed area made it worthwhile.
the layout is basically this: The Excel Centre has a main east-west central "corridor", with cafes and food places all along- think food hall of a shopping mall. On either side are exhibition areas, huge spaces divided up internally. Normally there's 2-3 other events at the same time as the Expo, so it's quite busy. Now, what we are contemplating this time is perhaps a bit cheeky - but - there's no pressing urge to actually go inside the hall, and therefore no great need to spend £9 on a ticket - unless you want to, that is! The ticket queue can be a bit monumental. There wouldn't be any problem with just cosplaying in the central corridor and the outside space - that's where all the cosplayers congregate! The floors are so inviting for wheels.....
Now - since there's going to be quite a few of us, transport is a bit of a problem. Mazz has driven us up previously, but I'm presuming that we'll be shoving all the costumes in the car and dressing once we get there? It's best, if you can, to get there by public transport, if you can't drive or get a lift. Car parking is plentiful but pricey. Excel has it's own station on the DLR, you need to take the underground then change.
Timing - if possible, I'd like us to be up and cosplaying by midday? Since Component hair and makeup is somewhat time consuming, I'd like to give an hour to get ready - so get there 11... the day opens properly at 11, with those who've paid extra entering from 10. So by 12 it's all swinging! I know if you're taking public transport that means quite the early morning... but it'll be worth it... promise!
what have I missed... any other questions?
